Founders Eiland Glover and John Reitano met in 2000 in Silicon Valley while working on a financial technology startup, and have been close friends and collaborators ever since. Frustrated with the failure of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to fulfill the promise of blockchain technology for ordinary people, they decided to create UR in order to bring the benefits of cryptocurrency access to every human being on the planet.

Eiland and John share the belief that technology properly paired with new human social arrangements can dramatically benefit humankind by increasing wealth for all members of society. They named their currency “UR” after the ancient Sumerian city-state of the same name. As one of the first cities on Earth, the creation of the city of Ur led to dramatic wealth creation for its inhabitants and contributed to major developments in the arts and technology.

The name was also chosen because it reveals what is the true source of the value of all money: you are (UR).
